DanceTrance Birmingham
Welcome to the other side of fitness! If you are looking for a new and exciting workout you have found it! Dance Trance was created in 1986 by Jay & Beth Handline. Presently, Dance Trance locations are rapidly popping up around the globe via our Dance Trance License and Certification program. Jay & Beth presently teach Dance Trance classes at the Jacksonville, Florida location. Their program is unique because all studios share and maintain the same choreography. This keeps the music and combinations fresh and alive at each studio. At all locations each class is packed and full of energy because of the variety and music selection this tight network offers. We appreciate your interest in our unique program, and we hope you enjoy your experience.

Instructors Bios:

Carla Higginbotham   Director
Carla has always been active; enjoying running and swimming. She took dance classes throughout college and assumed that that part of her life was over after graduation. She forced herself to suffer through hi/lo aerobics classes, watching the clock the entire time. Then Carla attended a new "hip hop" class being taught by Jay Handline, and her life was changed forever. That was in 1992. She began teaching the Dance Trance classes with Jay soon after that and became Director of Dance Trance Birmingham in 1999. She often attends "master classes" in New York and Florida and has attended the last two "Groove Tours" (sponsored by Dance Trance Culture Shock Atlanta), and taught to students on the 2004 cruise. Carla enjoys all dance styles and music, but prefers hip hop/street dance because it allows you to become very expressive with your movement - basically, anything goes."Dance Trance is special because it offers something for everyone - hip hop, jazz, Latin, rock - we do it all! Our goal in Dance Trance is to show the latest in choreography, use the coolest music around, encourage all fitness dance levels, and provide a high energy workout." For Carla Dance Trance is her escape - we call it "dance therapy", and it truly is a release for mind, body, and soul.

Melissa Dameron-Vines  Melissa Dameron-Vines has been involved with Dance Trance since 1993 when she took a Dance Trance Master Class at the Jewish Community Center in Birmingham, AL. Since she was a member of her high school's dance line, she felt right at home with the choreography and the music. She was one of four substitute instructors for Dance Trance until Jay moved the homebase studio to Jacksonville, FL in 1998. For the next five years she and the other teachers shared the Birmingham class and it is still going strong. In August of 2004, Melissa and her husband, Adam, moved to Gainesville, FL so he could attend UF. Because of Melissa, DT Gainesville is up and running. While Melissa prefers the dance and Latin pieces, she enjoys the variety offered in DT and often choregraphs routines and hip hop add-on material. She plans to make DT Gainesville the hottest class in town.

Krista Niedermeier
Krista has been involved with Dance Trance since 1993, and became an instructor in 1996. She loves the high-energy routines that allow you to let yourself go as well as hip hop and other styles that let you experiment with different types of music. Dance Trance helps her to release creativeness and helps her to (during class time) not worry about all of her many responsibilities. Dance Trance helps Krista to have fun and exercise at the same time. Although she has always been involved with sports and exercise -- waterskiing, softball and volleyball, Dance Trance lets Krista have fun and exercise while forgetting about life's challenges for a little while.

Ellyn Gagnon
Ellyn has been teaching since 1998 and still enjoys seeing people's eyes light up when they finally "get" a new routine, when they have experienced transformations such as weight loss, when they have made lasting friendships with class members, or when the beauty of a particular song moves them. Ellyn knows that Dance Trance changes your life as well as your body. She loves to challenge class members to expand their physical limits and to not be afraid to express emotion through dance. She is grateful for the opportunity to teach this class; because she believes whatever energy she has put into it has been more than returned to her. Ellyn states "Dance Trance has been the only workout activity that continues to capture my interest over time. The combination of diverse music, creativity, freedom of expression and a killer fitness component is unique. Dance Trance distinguishes itself through use of cutting-edge choreography combined with high-energy and muscle building moves."

Erin Mooney
Erin has been involved with Dance Trance since 2001. From the moment she attended her first class, she knew Dance Trance was a part of her life that was missing. Dance Trance is now a huge part of Erin's life. Dance Trance has kept her in great shape for the last four years. She has always been very active with sports, dance, and exercise, but never before Dance Trance found something she was completely dedicated to and forever indebted to. Dance Trance has brought to Erin beautiful friendships, creativity, expression of true emotion, release of daily tensions, a great overall workout, and a time to capture her inner peace. She is truly honored to have been asked to be a Dance Trance instructor. Her hope is to "give to others what my instructors have given to me, a deep passion for dance."

Mykel Alvis
Mykel started dancing at the age of 12 as a means to improve his baseball game. He kept at it all through high school, and danced full-time for most of his college career. He has continued to study and perform since then, both as a means of staying in shape and as a supplement to other disciplines. Mykel started Dance Trance soon after rehabilitating a blown knee in 1999 and has been a convert ever since. "It's got the right mixture of hard-core exercise and fun for me, and there's always enough variety to keep my interest. Plus I get to dance in a room full of beautiful sweaty women. What more could I ask for?"
